What is ZENITIA?

The key objective of ZENITIA is to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with next-generation aircraft and their integration into network operations, and to develop innovative, science- and evidence-based solutions aligned with Europe’s target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

To this end, ZENITIA will first advance the scientific understanding of the environmental impacts, particularly climate effects and air quality, of both current aviation practices and future fleets, including electric, hybrid-electric, and hydrogen-powered aircraft, considering their performance envelopes and emission profiles. Beyond environmental impacts, ZENITIA will identify the operational requirements and needs of next-generation fleets, assess their performance, and define potential concepts of operations to ensure a safe and optimized network with maximized environmental benefits, while evaluating the effect on cost and energy needs.

By connecting environmental science, real-world aviation operations and AI-based analysis, ZENITIA aims to make sure that next-generation aircraft and fuels deliver measurable climate benefits without compromising airspace safety, efficiency and manageability.

The end goal is to turn today's uncertainty into clear, actionable insight for aviation stakeholders.
